Cruise Lecturer                                        Dr. Tamara Montgomery

Over the years I have been a Special Interest Lecturer with Seabourn Cruise Line. My love for travel has taken me around the world to about 35 countries in Europe, the Mediterranean, Scandinavia, the Caribbean, Asia, Southeast Asia, West and East Russia, the Middle East, the north Atlantic and the Pacific. My PhD from USC, with a specialization in puppetry, has given me the opportunity to share this art form with travelers around the world. My 38 years of living in Hawaii and traveling in the Pacific have given me a wealth of experiences which are contained in my lectures.

Pacific Rim
Fragrant Plumeria Blossoms

In my lecture "The Flower Leis and Legends of Hawaii" I become a storyteller. Through comedy, romance, suspense and beautiful slides I reveal the legends behind the special flowers of Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Kauai, Lanai, Hawaii and the mysterious Ni'ihau.

I also lecture on "Tapa, the Bark Cloth of the Pacific", and how it is made, painted and used in Tahiti, Fiji, Samoa and other Pacific islands. I use fascinating slides and archival video to illustrate artifacts, jewelry, and ritual costumes.

Asia and Southeast Asia
Puppet from Thailand

As a teacher of Asian and Southeast Asian puppetry I present individual lecture demonstrations on the hand, rod, string and shadow puppetry of China, India, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, and Vietnam. My slide lectures include rare archival video of puppet construction and performances in rural areas. Seabourn Cruise Line passengers have commented on how interesting and informative the lectures were and how pleased they were to "newly" discover such "historically old" art forms. The University of Hawaii Theatre Department is world renowned for its Asian Theatre program and over the years I have had many opportunities to learn from guest artists and professors.

Oceania
Mask from New Guinea

Oceania is a very unique place to explore. I take you on a journey to exotic out of the way islands like Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Truk, New Guinea, Salomons, Carolines, and the Australs and show you the ceremonial masks and jewelry created by the islanders who live there. I include fascinating pictures of unique body ornamentation using shells, bones, paints, and tattooing.
